Chronic Post Traumatic Tension
Headaches
There are all kinds of headaches. Migraine headaches, sinus
headaches, and tension headaches are the most
common.
But have you heard of chronic
post-traumatic tension headaches? If you’ve experienced a
physical injury or intense emotional stress, you may suffer
from chronic post-traumatic tension headaches.
The good news is that most victims of these unusual kinds of
headaches will be rid of this head and neck pain within a few
weeks or months. Time heals! However, if someone experiences
chronic post-traumatic tension headaches, there may be more of
a problem at hand. They are especially difficult to
treat.
Still, plenty of options exist for those suffering from
chronic post-traumatic tension headaches. Make sure not to get
these headaches mixed up with other kinds, as treatment will
only be effective if you are properly diagnosed. In fact,
treatment for chronic post-traumatic tension headaches is
decidedly odd.
Treatment for chronic post-traumatic tension headaches
includes biofeedback (an electronic method that basically
teaches an individual how to relax), antidepressants like
amitriptyline and fluoxetine (usually administered in small
doses), acupuncture, propranolol (a Beta Blocker), and
sometimes TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator).
However, in many cases these therapies are ultimately
ineffective, especially for those who struggle with chronic
post-traumatic tension headaches as compared to less frequent
post-traumatic tension headaches.
As the causes of post-traumatic headaches are somewhat
psychological, emotional support is really the best treatment
method for people suffering from them. If someone suffering
from these headaches feels that family and friends have a
positive attitude and understand his or her struggle, then the
various therapies will be all the more helpful.
