Migraine Headaches
Strangely enough, as common as the headache is (over 95% of
people suffer from one at least once a year),
there are all sorts of myths about
them, especially regarding migraine headaches. And the sooner we
squash those myths, the sooner people can properly manage their
pain.
A common misconception is that migraines are just severe
headaches. Migraine headaches are not just extra painful
headaches. They are in actuality, a symptom of a neurological
disease.
Sinus headaches, tension headaches,
and other general aches in the head and neck can be caused by
all sorts of environmental and psychosocial factors whereas
migraine headaches are strictly triggered by an imbalance of
chemical substances, especially serotonin. This is why you
treat migraine headaches differently than other kinds – the
underlying problem is distinctly different.
As well, many are quick to pop a painkiller and not think
much more of their migraine. Sure, most headaches come and go
without severe consequence. However, migraine headaches should
be taken seriously as they can prompt physical complications
like blindness, stroke, and more. They can even be
life-threatening.
Unfortunately, migraine headaches are often misdiagnosed and
ultimately, migraine sufferers receive the wrong kind of
treatment. This is why people must be on their toes and
well-educated about how headaches are different.
Contrary to popular opinion, migraine headaches are nothing
to shrug at. Treatment is available, but only if you know that
it is required! If you suffer from chronic, throbbing headaches
and typical remedies are not successful at curing the pain,
consult your physician as you may be suffering from an actual
disease.
