Relieving Tension Headaches

A tension headache is often the result of emotional stress, fatigue and even a lack of nutrition. But commonly, physical stress like eyestrain and poor posture can cause the dull pain of a tension headache – so can whiplash. Reliving tension headaches is not difficult though. If you’ve experienced triggers like these, especially whiplash, reliving tension headaches is probably the topic that is of most concern to you. A tension headache is due to muscle tightness and symptoms include a dull (as opposed to throbbing) pain around the neck and head. Unfortunately if you’ve experienced muscle contractions via various stresses like whiplash, reliving tension headaches may not be the easiest task. This is because over-the-counter medicines, however useful, only deaden the pain of a headache and do not actually cure the underlying cause. In fact, if you take too many ordinary pain relievers, you may find your tension headaches worsen over time. But don’t worry! Here are some tips to reliving your headache.

Your doctor can prescribe special medications that cause drowsiness or muscle relaxation. These can be very effective in curing the pain and the root problem quickly. The real key is to prevent tension headaches altogether though. Of course, if you’ve endured a physical trauma like whiplash, the best approach is to combine pain killers, when necessary, with relaxation and a healthy diet. Get plenty of sleep, eat well, drink water, and use a heating pad to comfort your head and neck.

While tension headaches may be a little more elusive than sinus headaches and even migraine headaches, remedies are simply found in lifestyle choices as opposed to traditional medicines. And your whole mind, body, and spirit can benefit, in addition the muscles in your head and neck!
