Stress and Food Choices

There are two sides to the topic “stress and food choices.” Some poor food choices can cause stress while stress can also lead to poor food choices. And sometimes it’s difficult to tell which is which. But here is a guide to stress and food choices and eating the right kinds of foods so not only you nourish your body, but avoid stress too! Some of those who are stressed in life will find that they lack control at the dinner table and will make unhealthy choices in diet. Others will have the reverse problem and choose to not eat at all. But this is only a short-term fix for stress and will actually produce more anxiety down the road.

So what kinds of foods should you avoid when under stress? While alcohol, salt, sugar, and caffeine is tempting when you’re working 40 hours a week, taking care of a household, or studying for final exams, avoid them at all costs. They will actually make you feel worse ultimately. Instead, treat yourself to healthy foods. They will make you feel good and keep your body in top, physical condition so you are better able to handle the different obstacles of life. Fruits, vegetables, protein, and other ordinarily healthy foods are ideal. Also, drink plenty of water. Water nourishes every part of your body, including your skin!  Stress and food choices go hand in hand.

It’s okay to indulge in a slice of cake ever so often, but if you find yourself relying on a meal at Burger King every time you feel a little pressure from work, then you might be setting yourself up for an endless cycle of stress and overeating. As well, if you find yourself restraining from a regular diet and not eating enough, as a way to feel in control of something in your life, then you will have equally terrible, if not worse, consequences.

It’s important to not let your anxiety get to you and to learn ways to relieve your stress, and food choices play an integral part of this. Find other, healthier distractions (like painting a picture!) to get your mind off your daily troubles.
